History

There is very little written history in Resolution; most people are just too concerned with what comes next to be too concerned with what came before. Add to this the rarity and unreliability of computer information storage, and the prevalence of illiteracy, and it is little wonder not much is known about the past. There are some – fortunate enough to have the monetary resources and spare time – who have dedicated themselves to delving into society’s history, but they are stretched thin and so far have generally lacked a sense of cooperation toward a common goal.

There are oral accounts, of course – basically a jumble of stories, folk wisdom, fish tales, rumours, and wild fabrications – but such histories are notoriously unreliable past a generation or two. Nevertheless, certain questions demand speculation: Where did humankind originate, and why are there so many subspecies? How is it that there are so many vestiges of lost technology superior to what can currently be made? Where did the robots come from? What led to the dichotomy between Judges and Marshals? These and many more mysteries wait to be uncovered.
